The aim of this study is to determine the effects of ozone as a therapy for patient with retinitis pigmentosa. A double blind, placebo controlled study was designed, in which 123 patients, ages 15 to 65 years, and suffering from typical forms of retinitis pigmentosa participated Sixty two patients were randomly assigned to the treatment group and 61 to the control group.

A complete general and ophthalmologic examination was performed after signing an informed consent Snellen visual acuity was measured (less than 2.5 lines considered non significant changes) and Goldmann kinetic visual field with 31.5 asb. background and V-4e target.

Visual field areas were digitized and measured with a computer program (VISUAL). Ozonated blood was administered to patients in the treatment group, in a daily fashion for 15 days, while patients in the control group received only blood.

Participants were blind with regards to this, throughout the duration of the study Visual acuity remained the same, 6 months after the treatment, in 74.2 % of the patients, improve in 21 % and worsen in 4.8 %. Visual field area remained the same, 6 months after the treatment, in 41.9 % of the patients, improve in 46.7 % and worsen in 11.35 %.

Significant differences were observed between groups, with lower frequencies of improvements in controls are larger proportions of worsening. Improvements were not observed in 91.9 % of patients one year after the treatment.

This tendency was first noted after 6 months from the treatment. Ozone treatment is proved of benefit in patients with RP, although its action is temporary. Repeated administration after 6 months is recommendable to maintain its action

Retinitis Pigmentosa is an hereditary disease of the retina which produces night blindness, peripheral visual field loss and narrowing of the central vision, which degenerates, after several years, in total blindness. This disease affects approximately 0.5 % of the world population and it is estimated that in Cuba suffer this disease, 3.1 per 10,000 habitants, with a great incidence in the central and west region of the country. In Cuba, it has been using ozone therapy like part of the treatment of Retinitis Pigmentosa, since November 1986, in “Salvador Allende” University Hospital.

A study of the clinical evolution of 20 patients that have been treated (between 5 and 10 years) with repetitive cycles of ozone therapy was performed. No other therapy was associated.

The ways of ozone application was autohemotherapy or rectal insufflation. A complete ophthalmologic examination was performed during this period. Snellen visual acuity, considering significant changes more than 2 lines and Goldmann kinetic visual field (V-4e target), considering significant changes increase in more than 10 grades and/or appearance of peripheric windows, were analyzed.

The best results were achieved when ozone treatment is repeated, at least, twice a year, along all these years, with improvement of 70 % in the visual field and 42 % in the visual acuity.

The rest of the patients maintained their visual field or visual acuity the same as the initial value, without worsen the disease. Any side effect was observed. The satisfactory results encourage to recommend its use in patients affected by Retinitis Pigmentosa.

OZ-PO-044: O3 OZONE THERAPY-MAGNETOTHERAPY PATIENT AS A CARRIER OF CHRONIC SIMPLE GLAUCOMA. EXPERIENCE OF 10 YEARS OF WORK.

Ozone Research Center

Chronic simple glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness and visual disability in the world.  Given the mechanism of action of ozone and the magnetic field and the pathophysiology of the disease, a study was conducted to evaluate the therapeutic effect of these techniques.  We studied 200 patients who were administered ozone therapy, magnetic field and the combination of both.

We assessed visual function and nerve and intraocular pressure. Improvement was observed in visual acuity between 69 and 72% and visual field between 59 and 76%. There was a trend to lower intraocular pressure and the p-wave latency 100 of visual evoked potentials. In addition, another study in 220 patients in the initial stage of the disease and analyzed the influence of the action of ozone and its combination with the magnetic field.

Was also obtained very good results, highlighting the improvement in ocular hidrodenomia when the initial parameters were subnormal, based mainly on the increase in outflow facility of aqueous humor, and even without the use of local hypotensive treatment.

This shows that these methods of treatment should be applied in latent stage of the disease even though not present clinical manifestations.

OZ-PO-045: O3 OZONE RECTAL in retinitis pigmentosa visual field EVOLUTIONARY RESPONSE.

National Reference Center of Retinitis Pigmentosa
Ozone Research Center.

We performed a prospective longitudinal analytic in 17 patients with typical retinitis pigmentosa, who received rectal ozone therapy treatment at an ozone concentration of 50 mg / L, for 15 sessions. Underwent Goldman kinetic perimetry at baseline and monthly post-treatment, culminating the year. We found visual field improvement (> 25%) of basal area in 88.23% of patients treated, this being highest in the first month and equal to 76.47% with an average improvement of 42.87% of baseline

Applying analytical methods for estimating linear total variation was found, with the average baseline of 288 0 , which under estractificados analysis was only statistically significant (p = 0.014) in the first 6 months. There was statistically significant difference in mean visual field area, comparing the baseline and the average first half (z = 27), but not the second half (z = 1.13). The average visual field stabilization and loss of statistical significance of variation was 6.83 months.

We conclude that there is a temporary positive effect of ozone therapy on the visual field limited to the first 7 months post treatment.

ABSTRACT

Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is characterized by progressive night blindness. The aim of this study is to determine the efficacy of ozone therapy in patients with RP. A controlled, randomized, double blind clinical trial involving 68 patients was performed. Patients were divided into 2 groups: ozone, patients were treated with ozone by rectal administration (dose = 10 mg), during 15 sessions; control, as ozone group, but using oxygen. The main outcome variable was the visual field area (VFA).

Results demonstrated a significant improvement (SI) in 88.2 % of patients treated with ozone in comparison with 23.5 % achieved in the control group. In the ozone group, VFA tend to stabilize beyond a mean time of 6.83 months with a loose in SI afterward.

temporal positive effect of ozone therapy, over the natural course of RP, was found. It could be useful to apply ozone therapy in the first stages of the disease and at six-month intervals in order to enhance visual capabilities in RP patients.

Evaluation of the treatment with O3 ozone in patients with retinitis pigmentosa.

Fifty patients complaining about this disease were studied. All of them were treated with ozone during 15 sessions by autohemotherapy. No other therapy was associated. At the end of the treatment a second perimetry was performed to every patient, under the same circumstances and with the same equipment and personnel than the first one.

A good campimetric improvement was obtained. The satisfactory results encourage to recommend its use (O3 ozone) in patients affected by Retinitis Pigmentosa.

Retinitis pigmentosa in children and adolescents. Writing after O3 ozone therapy.

Children and adolescents, with a diagnosis of Retinitis Pigmentosa, who received treatment with ozone, in a relatively short time, (one month as an average), refer remarkable clinical improvement, in 90 % of cases.

The patients referred that, after the treatment, they were able to see more and better (with greater clearness and amplitude), they did not stumble at night and could play in the street.

It is almost constant the reference to the loss or decrease of the fright to darkness, anxiety and the improvement in their mood. They could throw and catch a ball. The objective improvement was observed in their writing (the second copy was obtained between 1 and 3 months after ozone therapy), after the treatment it was more clear, uniform and legible in most of cases.

Analysis of sanguineous biochemistry in patients with retinitis pigmentosa before and after the treatment with O3 ozone by autohemotherapy.

With the aim to deepen and rule out undesired side effects due to application of ozone therapy by autohemotherapy. It was performed this research, focused towards the study of possible modifications of different biochemical parameters in patients after such treatment.

Forty patients who received ozone daily until completing 15 sessions were studied, measuring the following parameters: creatinine-phospho-quinase, urea, creatinine, lactate-dehydrogenase, high density lipoproteins, cholesterol, triglycerides, hepatic enzymes (TCP, TGO, gGT), bilirrubine, uric acid, alkaline-phosphase, proteins, calcium, phosphorus, hemoglobin, hematocrites, red and white cells and blood platelets.

In most of the biochemical parameters studied, no significant differences were found between the values at the beginning and at the end of treatment.

Related to calcium and urea a significant increase was found, but both initial and final values are within the normal range. Decreases statistically significant in triglycerides and cholesterol towards normal values and increase in hemoglobin were found.

Endovenous O3 ozone therapy and blood lipids in arteritic and retinitis pigmentosa patients.

Present study was performed with the aim to assess the effect of ozone therapy through autohemotherapy, on the metabolism of lipids in patients with vascular disorders. Plasmatic levels of total cholesterol were measured, as well as HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, apo B and triglycerides, before, during and after 15 sessions of treatment, with 5 mg of ozone.

In arteritic patients a decrease of total cholesterol from 3.2 up to 21.5 %, (mean value 11.8 %) referred to the initial value was found. The HDL did not suffer any change and the apo B showed slight decrease of 7.9 %.

The triglycerides remarkably decreased from 21.9 to 67.3 % (mean value 46.1). In patients with Retinitis Pigmentosa, it was found remarkable average decrease of 14.8 % in cholesterol and 49.5 % in triglycerides, both referred to initial values.

Data suggest, endovenous ozone therapy, remarkably stimulates the metabolism of lipids in these patients. At the same time, new therapeutic possibilities are open for hiperlipemia treatment.

O3 Ozone therapy in optical nerve lesions.

Optical atrophy is one of the main causes of blindness in world. As part of the Central Nervous System the optical nerve has very few possibilities for regeneration. Among the factors, which can facilitate a certain degree of neuroplasticity of this structure is ozone therapy.

Results of ozone therapy (autohemotherapy), applied to 10 patients, who had different degrees of optical atrophy from several etiologies, are presented.

In 8 patients an improvement in vision sharpness or visual field were observed.

Two cases, which had hereditary optical atrophy did not improved. The results are discussed taking into account the different etiologies and affectation degrees.

O3 Ozone therapy in advanced chronic glaucoma.

The chronic glaucoma in advanced stage is a pathology regularly observed in ophthalmologic services. This disease has a bad prognosis with the treatments used so for. Bad irrigation is one of the factors, which worsen the symptoms.

The out-patients received the treatment usually employed in these cases, with a periodical control of several parameters, among them, the visual field. A group of these patients, chosen at random, received ozone therapy.

When ozone is applied as part of the treatment, there is an increase in the oxygenation of tissues and better evolution of these patients (enlargement of visual field) in comparison with the ones who did not received this treatment was proved.

Application of O3 ozone in the treatment of ocular burns.

Ocular burns due to chemical reagents present high frequency in Cuba either due to acids or alkalis.

Taking into account the sequels they produce (loss of sight and aesthetics in patients), the treatment with ozone was evaluated as positive, stemming from its stimulating effect over the metabolisation and oxygen transportation to tissue level, together with its germicidal effect, what also favors the epithelisation and reduces the inflammatory process.

Daily application of ozone by subconjunctival injection around or on the lesions was evaluated.

Application of O3 ozonized oil in keratitis of viral origin.

Keratitis is an inflammation of the cornea of diverse etiologies (viral, mycotic and bacterial). In Cuba it is frequent the care of this affection in emergency rooms and doctors' offices, and the viral one is the most common, in which it is observe a prolonged evolution in most of the cases.

Thirty patients affected by viral keratitis were treated by means of topic applications, 3 tiMes a day with ozonized oil. A control group treated with traditional methods (yodoxuridine, homatropine and anti-inflammatory drugs) was included.

It was observed that patients treated with ozonized oil showed clear improvement 48 hours after the treatment was started, and the cure was much more faster than in control group.

Treatment of superficial keratitis with O3 ozonized oil collyrium.

The wide range of therapeutic possibilities of ozone, due to its germicidal nature, and stimulating effect upon the metabolisation processes of oxygen, allow its wider introduction to different branches of Medicine, specially those in which the results are not altogether satisfactory. Particularly in ophthalmology, the superficial keratifcis are difficult to treat and have along evolution.

Ozonized oil collyrium was used in this disease, comparing the results with a control group treated with conventional procedures. Patients were distributed at random, in both groups. Time necessary for healing was taken as measure of effectiveness. Regarding secondary reactions, the level of tolerance was considered as good.

O3 Application of ozonized oil in patients with conjunctivitis.

The high incidence of cases with conjunctivitis and the germicidal effect of ozonized oil encouraged its application in the treatment for this disease. A study was performed in 130 patients affected by conjunctivitis from different etiologies, who were applied a drop of ozonized oil collyrium, twice a day.

Clear improvement was obtained twenty-four hours after beginning the treatment, with the disappearing of symptoms between the third and fourth days.

No undesired side effects were observed, what proves to be important if MB take into account that habitual medications are usually contraindicated in this disease, due to the complications, which usually arise.

Application of O3 ozone therapy in the treatment of corneal ulcers and kerato-conjunctivitis.

A study comprising 5O carriers of kerato-conjunctivitis and corneal ulcers caused by infections of bacterial, viral and mycotic etiology, which were treated with ozonized oil collyrium is presented. Owing to its germicidal power.

It was decided to use this product in such pathologies, since they are occasionally resistant to conventional treatment and evolve towards destructive alterations of the ocular eyeball or corneal opacities with great vision distortion.

It was obtained clearly positive response to treatment applied every 2 hours. Likewise a remarkable improvement was also observed in cases early treated with no extensive lesions.

In corneal parenchynal deep lesions much better improvement is obtained and the cure is faster when ozonized oil is added to conventional treatment.

EFECTS OF O3 OZONE IN PATIENTS WITH RETINITIS PIGMENTOSA.

The effects of ozone in 50 patients with retinitis pigmentosa was evaluated in the Retinitis Pigmentosa Center, Camagüey, Cuba. The patients suffer of photophobia, photopsia and reduce vision on dark places.

Considering that the patients with remission of two symptoms of the disease after the ozone treatment is considered as signs improvement, in this case all of them after the 7th and 8th ozone application didn't present photophobia and phototopsia, increasing also the quality of their vision (by means of improvement in the visual acuity and visual field). In spite of, after 6 month the appearance of signs and symptoms in all the patients took place.

It is considered that the results are important and very useful as alternative in patients that not admit the surgery, repeating it twice a year.

O3 OZONE THERAPY IN DIFFERENT OPHTHALMOLOGIC DISEASES.

Since 1992, we have been using ozone therapy in our province, like a new therapeutic option in the treatment of Retinitis Pigmentosa. Taking into account the different medical properties of ozone: Improvement of the oxygen transportation to tissue, activation of the enzymes participating in peroxide or oxygen radical scavenging, immunological and metabolic modulator, as well as to be a therapy ease to apply, we decided to use ozone therapy in others ophthalmologic diseases.

180 patients were treated with daily rectal ozone therapy, during 20 days, representing 80 with Retinitis Pigmentosa (no systemic, stage I and II), 45 with progressive myopia, 25 with chronic glaucoma of open angle (tonometrically compensated), 20 with optic atrophy (less than one year of evolution and not hereditary), 10 with diabetic retinopathy (no proliferative). Healing criteria was according to each disease. Clinical evaluation was made each 3 months, up to 1 year. In patients with Retinitis Pigmentosa, 75 % improved their visual acuity (post-treatment and 6 months later).

After 1 year, 23 % of improvement still remained. According to visual field, 76 % of patients improved it after treatment and up to 9 months, but after 1 year, 16 % lost their improvement. Respect to progressive myopia, the visual acuity increased in 78 % (post-treatment and 9 months later) and remained 58 % after 1 year.

In glaucoma, 65 % increased the visual acuity (post-treatment and 9 months later), maintaining 53 % of improvement after 1 year. Visual field increased in 76 % of patients, post-treatment and after 1 year. In diabetic retinopathy, 60 % improved their visual acuity (post-treatment), diminishing to 40 %, 6 months later and 20 %, after 1 year. Respect to optic atrophy, 45 % of improvement in visual field was achieved (post-treatment) maintaining its figure after 1 year.

It is concluded that ozone therapy offers very good results in this opthalmologic diseases, without side effects, being necessary to repeat the treatment in dependence of the disease and the patient evolutions

O3 OZONE THERAPY IN PATIENTS SUFFERING FROM OPTIC NERVE DYSFUNCTION.

One of the most frequent causes of blindness around the world is optic nerve dysfunction (OND), or optic atrophy, which can be the result of different disturbances affecting the visual pathway like ischemic, toxic, metabolic and hereditary-degenerative phenomena, injuries or compression, among others, producing this type of irreversible sequel. The ozone therapy is a very promising method to take into account.

The main object of this study is to evaluate the feasibility to improve the visual function of a group of patients, with different degrees of OND with reduced possibilities of vision improvement, by means of ozone therapy. To 60 patients, suffering from OND of different etiologies and time of evolution, were applied the mixture ozone/oxygen endovenously by autohemotherapy, during 15 sessions.

Ozone concentration and doses are used according to the biochemical status of each patient. An ophthalmological examination and a set of tests conformed by visual acuity (VA), visual field by Goldmann Perimetry (VF), visual evoked potentials (VEP), Pelli Robson Contrast Sensitivity Test (PRCST) was applied to patients before and after ozone therapy treatment.

- PRCST and VF were parameters mostly improved in patients with 86 % & 83 % respectively,

- followed by VA (55 %) and VEP (37 %). Good results were achieved in all etiologies studied,

- except Leber optic atrophy, where no improvement was observes, neither objective nor subjective.

APPLICATION OF O3 OZONE IN PATIENTS WITH KERATITIS.

Since February 1996, 120 patients with keratitis were treated in the Retinitis Pigmentosa Center of Camagüey, Cuba. 60 patients (sample) were treated with ozone and 60 patients (control group) with conventional treatment (yodoxuridine, leuferon, homatropine, vitamin therapy).

35 males and 45 females, between 15 and 35 years old presenting photophobia and feeling of strange bodies in their eyes were evaluated. At the present, this disease has a long course and the conventional treatment is very expensive, mostly because of the medications it requires. The ozone treatment was rectal application and subconjunctival way, combining both.

After the first week, all the patients treated with ozone started to show signs of improvement and they were totally cured after 3 weeks, while in the control group, the evolution had a long course, more than 6 months.

We concluded that ozone therapy brings very positive results in the treatment of this disease.

Endophthalmitis is one of the most feared disease treated by ophthalmologists. This is an infection that invades the extensive intraocular uveal tractus, pus in the aqueous humor and vitreous, and corneal opacity, which causes irreversible vision loss. The medical management is enucleation or evisceration in most urgent times. We studied 11 patients with a diagnosis of endophthalmitis in the Hospital "Pando Ferrer" in the year 1992, which underwent complete blood count, glucose, urea, creatinine, electrocardiogram, blood gas capillary and venous and eye discharge.

All patients were evaluated clinically daily eye. Initially the patients received treatment with intravenous antibiotics and local, and noting that despite 9 d of treatment, patients worsened, we decided to treatment with intravenous ozone by the method of autohemotherapy higher the dose of 10 mg, in each session and 0.15 mg topically.

We obtained excellent results, eradicating the infection in all patients. Furthermore, they are avoided in an ocular eviceración.

OZ-P-103: SUBCONJUNCTIVAL O3 OZONIZED BLOOD IN THE DEEP KERATITIS.

Provincial Center of Retinitis Pigmentosa

Deep keratitis is a cellular infiltration of the deep layers of the cornea, caused by multiple infections, especially viral type, with a diversity of clinical presentation. The main symptoms are visual disturbances, anxiety, and visual disturbances. Its evolution can vary from a few days to months.

Given the germicidal properties and stimulating processes of oxygen metabolism and blood circulation which has ozone, we conducted a population-based study in patients with deep keratitis using subconjunctival injections of ozonated blood. Extracted 1 mL of blood, ozonizó the same with an ozone concentration of 60 mg / L and was administered subconjunctivally, twice per week.

Ozone obtained using the computer as OZOMED (Cuba). We studied two groups of patients, one control, with 15 patients who applied traditional treatment and a study group with twenty patients who were injected with ozonized blood.

To compare the evolution of each group independently, nonparametric techniques were used longitudinal population and to compare the two treatments, non-parametric cross-population comparison, with a reliability of 95%. Patients in both groups underwent visual acuity test, examination with direct ophthalmoscope and slit lamp.

With the subconjunctival application of ozonated blood was achieved shorten the duration of the disease, obtaining excellent results. All patients improved corneal transparency and visual acuity found no harmful side effects.

OZ-P-106: EXPERIENCE OF O3 OZONE IN CHRONIC SIMPLE GLAUCOMA.

Hospital Universitario, Sancti Spiritus.

Ozone is recognized multiple beneficial properties in relation to your application to preserve human health. Systemic administration improves tissue oxygenation due to the beneficial effect that occurs in the bloodstream.

Given that chronic simple glaucoma is generally asymptomatic pathology manifested by reduction and visual field changes as a result of increased intraocular pressure and therefore the degree of ischemia that is subjected to optic nerve, ozone therapy beneficial effects occur in relation to the conservation and improvement of retinal circulatory state level and therefore in the vital capacity of the affected individual of glaucoma.

A descriptive study was performed in 40 patients with a diagnosis of chronic simple glaucoma treated at outpatient clinics in the period January to December 1999. They outpatient medical histories that included complete eye examination with gonioscopy. All patients reported kinetic perimetry before and after ozone therapy and outpatient follow-up.

In 80% of cases it has improved visual field, especially in patients without marked deterioration, which makes us insist on the early diagnosis of the disease.

In the remaining 20% was found visual field deterioration. These patients presented at baseline tubular field.

Application of O3 Ozone Therapy and Electromagnetic Field in Primary Open Angle Glaucoma

Ferrer L., Góngora, Santos D., Pérez and Menéndez S.

Primary open angle glaucoma is a chronic illness, producing serious visual problems if it is not diagnosed appropriately and treated correctly. It represents a big health problem, that affects economically the family and the state, besides being presented in ages where man has complete physical and intellectual capacities. It constitute the second cause of blindness and visual disability in the world.

Increase intraocular pressure is a factor of high risk in this disease, although exist patients with normal intraocular pressure with loss of their visual function, after topical or surgical treatments, with a high deterioration of the optic nerve. Since 1989, we are carrying out a rehabilitation program for these patients suffering of glaucoma, using ozone therapy and electromagnetic field, together with hypotensive treatment.

Ozone therapy is applied by rectal administration (ozone concentration: 40 mg/L and 200 mL) in cycles of treatment of 20 sessions, twice per year. In 1993, this rehabilitation program was generalized to the whole country, being applied in those hospitals where exist the ozone therapy department and the electromagnetic equipment.

The results of these 15 years demonstrate a positive result in the visual function (visual field and visual acuity) with more than 70 % of improvement.

According to the visual evoked potentials, a decrease in the latency of the P 100 wave was achieved. Also, a decrease in the intraocular pressure (more than 50 %) was achieved. No side effects were observed.

O3 Ozone Therapy in Patients with Retinitis Pigmentosa.

Copello M., Menéndez, S., Erguía F. and Menéndez N.

Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is characterized by progressive night blindness. The aim of this study is to determine the efficacy of ozone therapy in patients with RP. A controlled, randomized, double blind clinical trial involving 68 patients was performed. Patients were divided into 2 groups: ozone, patients were treated with ozone by rectal administration (dose = 10 mg), during 15 sessions; control, as ozone group but using oxygen.

The main outcome variable was the visual field area (VFA), measured in the Goldman Perimetry (with V4 and white stimulus). To all patients VFA was measured at the beginning of the study and every month during one year follow-up. Significant improvement (SI) was only assessed if an improvement of 25 % of basal VFA was presented and maintained in 2 consecutive monthly exams.

Results demonstrated a SI in 88.2 % of patients treated with ozone in comparison with 23.5 % achieved in the control group (p = 0.003). In the ozone group, SI was more frequent and of high magnitude in the first month of follow-up (76.5 % of patients, with 42.9 % of mean improvement).

A significant difference in the main VFA during the first semester comparing with the basal VFA was achieved (Z = 27), but not occurring the same in the second semester (Z = 1.13). In the first semester 78.4 % of patients improved their visual field, while in the second semester only 20.8 %. VFA tend to stabilize beyond a mean time of 6.83 months with a loose in SI afterward.

A temporal positive effect of ozone therapy, over the natural course of RP, was found. It could be useful to apply ozone therapy in the first stages of the disease and at six-month intervals in order to enhance visual capabilities in RP patients.

O3 Ozone Therapy in Retinitis Pigmentosa

Pérez L.J.

The aim of this study is to determine the efficacy of ozone therapy for patients with retinitis pigmentosa. A double blind, placebo controlled study was designed for three years, in which 186 patients, with ages from 15 to 65 years participated, suffering from typical forms of retinitis pigmentosa.

After signing an informed consent, a complete general and ophthalmologic examination was performed, before and after the treatment and 6 months later. Snellen visual acuity was measured (less than 2.5 lines considered non significant changes) and Goldmann kinetic visual field with 31.5 asb. background and V-4e target.

The sample was divided into 2 groups: ozone - 165 patients treated daily, with ozone by major autohemotherapy, during 15 sessions, using an ozone concentration of 40 mg/L and a volume of 100 mL, in 100 mL of blood; control - 21 patients, 100 mL of their blood were extracted, collected in a flask with anticoagulant and then immediately reinfused.

The results demonstrated, 6 months after the treatment, that 21 % of patients treated with ozone maintained their visual acuity improvement, the 74.2% remained the same and 4.8 % worsen. According to visual field area, 46.7 % of patients maintained their improvement, 41.9 % remained the same and 11.35 % worsen.

Significant differences were observed between both groups, with lower frequencies of improvements in control group and larger proportions of worsening.

Conclusions: Ozone therapy is a useful treatment for patients with RP, although its action is temporary. Repeated administration after 6 months is recommendable to maintain its action.

O3 Ozone Therapy and Redox Balance in Patients with Retinitis Pigmentosa

Menéndez S., Hernández F. and Copello M.

Ozone therapy is capable to stimulate the endogenous antioxidant defense system, by means of an oxidative preconditioning, preparing the host to face physiopathological conditions mediated by reactive oxygen species. The aim of this paper is to correlate the oxidative stress or redox index of patients with Retinitis Pigmentosa with the clinical efficacy of the ozone therapy treatment.

Twenty seven patients were treated with a cycle of ozone therapy (20 sessions) every 6 months. Ozone was applied by rectal insufflation at a dose of 8 mg (ozone concentration: 40 mg/L and a volume of 200 mL). Nineteen patients received 2 cycles of ozone therapy and 8 patients received 4 cycles of ozone therapy.

For the oxidative stress diagnosis several biochemical parameters were measured: superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione S transferase, reduced glutathione, conjugate dienes, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, total hydroperoxides and redox index.

The clinical evolution was measured by means of visual field and visual acuity.

An improvement of the visual field and the visual acuity of 70 and 19 % of patients, respectively, were achieved. Visual acuity diminished in 1 patient (3 %) and remained the same in 78 %.

Respect to the redox index, patients maintained its figure in the range of no stress, at the end of the treatment, in spite of the oxidative stress present in patients with Retinitis Pigmentosa.

The oxidative stress diagnosis is a valuable system in order to personalize the dose of ozone treatment. Ozone therapy is a good therapeutic option for patients with Retinitis Pigmentosa, without side effects.

Ozone therapy in patients with diabetic retinopathy

Hernández R., Ramírez T., Guerrero M., Betancourt J., Rubio L. and Izquierdo N.

The aim of this paper is to evaluate the efficacy of ozone therapy in the treatment of Non-Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy (NPDR), an ocular complication of diabetes. Twenty five patients were examined through clinic biometry, in order to confirm the absence of other complications of diabetes.

The inclusion criteria were: patients between 40 and 60 years old, males and females who suffered loss of visual acuity produced by retinal changes due to diabetic retinopathy. Patients were treated with ozone, by rectal insufflation, at concentration between 35-40 mg/L and 200 mL, one daily, for 15 sessions.

This cycle of treatment was repeated every six months, up to 2 years. An ophthalmologic evaluation (visual acuity, direct and indirect ophthalmoscopy, retinophoto and fluorescein angiography) of the patients was performed at the beginning and at the end of every cycle of ozone therapy.

In 72 % of the patients a visual improvement was achieved, with a slow disappearance of microaneurysm, intraretinal hemorrhages, hard exudates, microhemorrhages and retinal edema.

From the second cycle on, this improvement was maintained in direct relation with a clinic biometry within the normal parameters (cholesterol, glycemia and creatinine), mainly on patients who suffered from Diabetes type II. No visual improvement was observed in the rest of the patients (28 %) during 2 years of follow-up.

An appropriate metabolic control of patients who suffer from mild NPDR was achieved, allowing a favorable recovering of their vision, as well as an improvement in their quality of life.

On the basis of the stimulant effect of medical ozone in the processes of oxygen metabolization and blood circulation we can recommend this therapy for the treatment of patients suffering of Non-Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy.

O3 Ozone Therapy in Senile Macular Degeneration.

Soto G., Falcón J., Montesino I. and Soler L.

Taking into account the incidence of senile macular degeneration (SMD) and low efficacy of conventional treatment, the aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of ozone therapy in patients with SMD of dry type. A retrospective study was performed in 22 patients assisted at the Ophthalmologic Service of the Medical Surgical Research Center (CIMEQ).

Patients were diagnosed through a complete ophthalmologic examination and fluorescent angiography. Ozone was applied by major autohemotherapy (at an ozone concentration of 40 mg/L and 100 mL) and by rectal application (at an ozone concentration of 40 mg/L and 200 mL), during 20 sessions. A high percent of patients (54.5 %) treated were between 6l and 70 years. White race predominate (45.4 %), as well as female sex (68.2 %).

The results demonstrated an improvement (with an average of 2 tenths-visions) of their visual acuity in 80 % of the patients treated with ozone. Ozone therapy could be a good therapeutic choise for patients suffering of SMD of dry type.

Retinitis Pigmentosa - Adverse Reactions in O3 Ozone Therapy.

Pérez L.J., Román C. and García.

The aim of this paper is to describe the presence or not of adverse reactions during and after the applications of ozone therapy in patients with Retinitis Pigmentosa in the last ten years. A retrospective study was done with 2486 Retinitis Pigmentosa patients in the "Camilo Cienfuegos" International Retinitis Pigmentosa Center, from January 1993 to January 2003.

Major autohemotherapy, 15 applications, (with an ozone concentration of 40 mg/mL and 50 mL of volume) or rectal insufflations (with the same number of ozone applications and ozone concentration, with a volume of 100 mL) were applied to these patients.

The results demonstrated that 8 patients referred some kind of adverse reactions: 2 with nauseas, other 2 with stomach depletion, euphoria in 2, unusual fatigue in 1 and metal taste in 1; 5 of them receiving rectal insufflations. This represents the 0.001 % of the total of patients treated. No ophthalmic side effects were observed in this group.

Conclusion: In our institution the ozone therapy has been found to be an extremely safe medical therapy, free from side effects.
